It’s rainy season here in South Africa which pretty much means that it’s going to rain every dang day.  This makes it difficult to do some of the outdoor things we want to do and so on this particular day we thought, “Let’s head up to the Highest Brewery in all of Africa!”

Hops Hollow, which is at the very top of the Long Tom Pass in Mpumalanga province, South Africa. Part of a fabulous and fast-growing trend in regional craft beers in South Africa, this organic microbrewery’s claim to fame is that it’s the highest in Africa. At more than 7000 feet above sea level, its location is as much its signature as its delicious home-brewed draughts and ales.”

Long Tom Pass has an amazing history and is named after the fearsome cannon that the Boers shot over 6 miles at their British enemies.  It’s now the home of several resorts including the Misty Mountain Resort which is absolutely beautiful!

There you can find great lodging,  hiking trails, quad and horse rentals and of course, the famous Long Tom Toboggan Run which hurtles you down the mountain at 40 kmh in a small cart.  Not for the faint at heart!

We continued up the mountain and finally turned into the lovely Hops Hollow Brewery, a beautiful old farm that has been turned into a state of the art crafthouse!

We were greeted by two lovely Border Collies,  a roaring fireplace in the center of the room and some fantastic craft beer!

This place is super chill and you can order a drink and just walk around the place.  They’ve got a great smoking lounge area with it’s own wood stove as well as expansive grounds for you to meander around.

We loved seeing the horses of course even though it was raining!

Sitting by the fire, eating the special of Lamb Curry, sipping their dozens of craft brews and having a beautiful paradise to stroll around in was a perfect way to spend a rainy day in South Africa!
