Sabie is known as the “city of waterfals” and for good reason! We took a day trip with our favorite guide Trudie to two of the beautiful waterfalls and some beautiful caves. Our first stop was Lone Creek Falls. After a long drive along some dirt roads with wonderful scenary we arrived at the park gate. We were charged about $3 to enter, which we thought was pretty reasonable, and then entered a hiking trail going up to the falls. The walk itself was beautiful with a stone path winding up through the forest, huge vines hanging from the trees on the side and blooming flowers everywhere. As we wound up the trail we came to a viewing spot off to the right and first saw the falls!

We then wound around down the mountain to the pools at the bottom where we had some amazing views of this magnificent waterfall! The entire time you could hear the Cicadas screaming loudly and tis sound combined with the rushing water downstaream and the crashing of the waterfall made the entire scene surreal and all of our senses were overwhelmed…

After we left Lone Creek we moved on to the next waterfall, Horeshoe Falls… The setting was a beautiful farmlike atmosphere with gentle rolling fields and outbuildings as well as a rushing stream flowing down from the waterfall.

We hiked up a beautiful stone path that was slightly more difficult and less maintained than Lone Creek but was well worth the hike!  As we reached the top we were greeted by a magnificent double waterfall (hence the name) and a massive pool of water at the bottom.  Luckily, we had taken our trip on a weekeday and we literally had the place almost to ourselves!

On our way back we stopped at a local roadside cave and hiked through that as well.  It was dark inside so we didn’t get very many good pictures but there was a massive entrance and looking out we could see the beautiful African countryside in picture perfect color!

We’re off next week to see the famous Bridal Veil Falls so stay tuned!
